What a Good Expansion Season Actually Looks Like in the NWSL

Boston Legacy FC will finish their first NWSL season somewhere near the bottom of the table with roughly 23 points.

Whether that is a failure depends entirely on what an expansion season is supposed to produce, and the league’s recent history gives two very different answers.

The Bay FC comparison

Bay FC entered the league in 2024 and reached the playoffs immediately. It was held up at the time as the model for how to launch a club.

Bay FC have finished near the bottom in the two seasons since, and currently sit 15th — below Boston on points per match. A fast start did not compound into anything.

Two different problems

Boston have scored 28 and conceded 40. Bay FC have scored 22 and conceded 30.

Boston built an attack and left the defending unresolved. Bay FC built a defensive base and cannot score. Both are fixable, but they are not equally fixable — a settled back line and a goalkeeper are more available in a transfer market than a forward who scores fifteen.

The results that count as evidence

Boston beat Kansas City 1-0, Orlando 2-1 and 1-0, Denver 3-2, Chicago 2-0, and Utah 2-1 away in September. Six wins, most of them against sides at or above mid-table.

A first-year club that can beat good teams has something. A first-year club that only beats bad ones has a schedule.

What year two should look for

The measure is not the table position. It is whether the club’s identifiable weakness gets addressed in one offseason, and whether the middle-of-season form — five wins and four draws in fourteen matches from May to July — becomes the baseline rather than the peak.

Boston have seven matches left to establish which of those two stretches was the real one.
