Boston Legacy Score More Than Bay FC and Sit Below Them. That Is the Whole Season.

Boston Legacy FC finish most weeks near the bottom of the NWSL table, and the reason is not the one people assume.

They have scored 28 goals in 23 matches — more than Bay FC, who sit below them, and more than four clubs currently in playoff position. They have conceded 40.

Forty goals against

Only Chicago Stars, at 53, have given up more. Boston’s goal difference of -12 is almost entirely a defensive number, and the pattern shows up in the scorelines rather than the summaries.

3-4 to Portland. 1-4 at Racing Louisville. 2-5 at Angel City. 0-3 at Houston. Four matches, sixteen goals conceded, and six scored — which is the season in miniature. Boston can score. They cannot stop anyone.

The middle of the season was genuinely good

From early May to late July this was not a bottom-two team. Boston beat Denver 3-2, Orlando 2-1, Chicago 2-0, Orlando again 1-0 away, and Kansas City 1-0, while drawing with Gotham, Bay FC twice, and Denver.

That is five wins and four draws across a stretch of fourteen matches. Played at that rate over a full season, Boston are a mid-table club.

Then August happened

Four defeats in five, and the aggregate was 8-15. The concessions got worse as the month went on: four to Racing, five to Angel City.

Whether that is fatigue, injuries or a defensive structure that stopped holding up is the question the club has to answer internally. What is visible from outside is that the collapse was defensive, not offensive — Boston kept scoring throughout.

The September 4 result matters

Boston won 2-1 at Utah Royals on September 4, away, against a side sitting fourth. It is the kind of result that says the August run was a stretch rather than a permanent state.

What 23 points means in year one

This is an expansion season. Boston Legacy did not exist last year, and the club has assembled a squad that scores at a mid-table rate in its first attempt at the league.

Twenty-three points is a real number for a first season, and it was built the harder way. Attacks are difficult to construct and defenses are comparatively fixable — a goalkeeper, a centre-back, a settled shape. Boston arrive at their first offseason needing the easier half.
